Altitude Film Distribution Amy, the new documentary by director Asif Kapadia, is a paradox. As you probably know, singer passed away in 2011 at the ominous age of 27 (Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, and Cobain all died at the same age), and Kapadia's film recounts her life in personal fashion, utilizing home videos and interviews with those closest to her. Would Winehouse approve? Her life was marred by paparazzi and catcalls at every turn. The film isn't subtle about her apathy towards fame and resentment of those who wouldn't leave here alone. A personal documentary would seem to go against her wishes. But, despite the icky feeling Amy instills, it's hard to deny the film as anything but downright riveting.
Winehouse lives in British music lore and, in the film, her hero, Tony Bennett compares her to Billie Holliday as a champion jazz singer. She was an incredible talent, and her shrug away from the limelight and towards a life of self-medication, only makes her story that much more fascinating. Call it a cautionary tale, but Amy is also a celebration of Winehouse the artist. Altitude Film 4.
