Yeah, some sort of proper POWER box would be nice. I'm not sure what the user base is like for 32bit FreeBSD/powerpc. I guess embedded systems may be a justification for eventual Tier 1 support and subsequent official binary packages. The ppc64 repo I'm aware of was apparently built on a beefy POWER system, but I'm not sure if the owner/user is interested in ppc32. Sort of, but not as much. The QorIQs are actually 64-bit, but dual-mode capable because they are not AIX systems.

Another option is BSD Unix on a PowerPC – since OS X’s roots are in BSD Unix they play really well together. With a Mac, you can.

So in more than a few cases, ppc 32-bit or little-endian is actually going to make sense. (I think it's Juniper has some gear that's Freescale in 64/LE.) There's a LOT of PowerISA options out there, it's just that they're all terribly bloody exotic.

If someone actually built a ppc64 on a real POWER box and not a KVM box, it'd be news to me. The 7xxL's aren't really big, or really true POWER. (I think the KVM was hackery too, but don't hold me to that. I don't do KVM hardware.) FreeBSD is still a ways from booting on Cripple-CHiRP, but closer than IVM native has ever gotten.

As if it wasn't obvious, I'm the resident true blue POWER guy. Actual POWER boxes are PAPR; FreeBSD can be booted on certain P5+ and P6 PAPR hardware using the secret Lx86 incantations but not on P6+ or later. Even with double-secret wizardry, native mode is very tetchy - the LPAR has to be 1 whole core, can't enable AME on the frame, can't enable sharing, can't use VIOS, and only a very few number of cards can maybe be patched in. Mind, I wouldn't say no to the FreeBSD Foundation investing in joining the OpenPOWER Foundation and buying a proper OpenPOWER (PowerISA POWER8) cluster with the appropriate takeoffs. In fact, I think it would be a better investment than the Associate ($0) level since it means board eligibility. Hint: Netflix likes POWER8.

Mostly, I'd like to see them invest in a publicly available cluster - preferably with the Wistron hardware since they've got 2S CAPI-enabled with full JTAG intact. Though I am not looking forward to a repeat of SCHED_ULE when people realize an x86 strategy faceplants on POWER.
