Hello, We have been enjoying MOTU's Fastlane USB MIDI interface for years, and it has worked perfectly with Mac OSX Panther. We use MIDI with a Roland KR-570 with Finale and Cakewalk Metro. (We also have installed Garage Band along with iLife 05 for the new Tiger installation), You can guess what's next: We are 'early adopters' of the new Mac Tiger OS, and installing Tiger has disabled MIDI on our system. We visited the Apple site and also We were very encouraged to see that the latest driver for Fastlane USB is Tiger-compatible. We have downloaded and attempted to install the 'MOTU USB OSX Install' package many times. Installation appears to proceed normally - Interestingly, the installer offers a decision to place the driver in Applications or on the system drive.

We assume that we should select the system drive. Installation proceeds normally, and ends with a dialog box to restart. After restarting, we still do not have MIDI functionality. Checking in 'Audio MIDI Setup' shows a configuration that includes the Fastlane USB driver, but I believe this is left over from Panther. In the MIDI connection diagram, the Fastlane USB driver is dimmed out, and if we double-click on this, the option to set 'Device is online' is dimemd out and unavailable. 'Test Setup' does not send data to the Roland KR-570 we have connected and powered-up. 'Rescan MIDI' does not detect the Fastlane USB.

'Add Device' does not offer the Fastlane USB as an option. We also experimented with building a MIDI configuration from scratch, and scanning for MIDI devices etc. But could not get Audio MIDI Setup to recognize the Fastlane device. We then attempted to determine if the Fastlane driver had actually been installed. Looking from the root level of our system drive, we looked in '/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers' but this folder was empty. ( We noticed that a backup from Panther had driver files here. One was 'MOTU MIDI Driver.plugin'.

As an experiment, we copied these driver plugins to '/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers', but we saw the same symptoms as above after restart. We checked as well as forum and tech support listings at but it's a bit early for postings to help us. Any chance that Tiger handles these differently and puts the driver elsewhere? We are hoping to enjoy solid, reliable performance from the Fastlane USB interface with Tiger, just as we did with Panther. The MIDI driver lives at: Library/Audio/MidiDrivers and also at: System/Library/Extensions/MOTU MIDI DRIVER.kext! When you deinstall or install a new driver deinstall the old driver before installing the new one. It is very usefull to disconnect the interfaces and make a restart. I had the same problem.

Motu tech worked through it with me. 1) Load driver 2) Shut off interface 3) Open audiomidi setup 4) Highlight interface and DELETE it. That will leave just your MIDI devices. 5) Turn on interface and a new interface icon should appear.

6) Reconnect your cables and you should be good to go! I've got a similar problem with OS 10.3.6 not recognizing my Fastlane USB. I partition my HDD with one full copy of OS9.2.2 and the other with 10.3.6. FreeMIDI has always worked without a hitch for me.
