Does anyone know how to play any of Michael Brecker's cliche licks? The one I am thinking of I think involves alternate fingerings, but I am not sure. If anyone has McCoy Tyner's album 'Infinity', Brecker does it on his solo on 'Impressions' around 6:20, as well as 7:05 to the end of his solo. On the cd 'Some Skunk Funk' with Randy and Michael Brecker, he does it during 'Some Skunk Funk.' He also does it here: around 2:45.

If anyone knows how to play these licks, I would be eternally in your debt. When I was in college for music, I went through quite a brecker phase, he is still one of my favorites. I have transcribed a ton of brecker solos, probably about 25-30 of them. I am telling you this becuase the thing that made it easy (easier!) was a slow down machine. I cant remember who made it, but Im sure you can find one.

You plug in the CD player and you can slow the pace way down to 1/2 spped I believe and keep the same pitch. GREAT for transcribing those brecker lines and you can hear what he is doing. Yes the sounds you are hearing are overtones/alternate fingerings. Try to play a F above tuning C and finger a low B flat. You should get the same pitch.

Play a G, finger a low C, same pitch. High B and B flat you can play and then finger the same low notes. Basically he plays up the scale and hits the note and then the alternate after. Playing through the overtones are great for long tones and working on your sound and control as well.
